Esther Price Story
Esther Price (1905 - 1994)
As distinctive as Esther Priceís gold box, so is the taste of our chocolates. Esther Price Candies continues the tradition of old fashioned quality using the same recipes that Esther Price herself perfected years ago.
It all began when Esther learned to make fudge in her home economics class. She was so excited, she ran home and asked her mother if she could make more. From that day forward, Estherís passion was making candy. Esther would take chocolates to her co-workers at a department store in downtown Dayton, Ohio. After starting her family in 1926, these same co-workers encouraged her to continue making candy for them to buy. The word about Estherís delicious candy spread and in no time she was selling it to department stores and businesses. Thus began what is now recognized as one of the finest candy producing operations in the world.
Esther's ingenuity, perseverance and loving care made her chocolates famous. It was Esther's belief that cream and butter make the difference and she insisted on using only the finest ingredients available. To this day, the premium ingredients and freshness are unmistakable in every delicious bite. The Esther Price tradition of old-fashioned quality is ensured by making all chocolates at a single location on Wayne Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. Many chocolates are still made by hand, just like in Esther's day!
In 1976, Esther sold her company to four businessmen from Cincinnati, Ohio. The remaining two of the four original partners, Jim Day and Ralph Schmidt, continued to operate Esther Price Candies carrying forward Esther's tradition of old-fashioned quality.
In 2006, Esther Price Candies became a family owned business as Jim Day became the last of the original four businessmen who purchased the business from Esther. Jim was joined by his three daughters, sons-in-law and granddaughter. Some actively run the day-to-day operations and others provide guidance as members of our Board of Directors.
Today, Esther Price Candies produces about one million boxes of candy per year and employs about 100 people during our peak season. Our retail stores are open year-round, customers can place online orders 24 hours a day (www.EstherPrice.com), and our wholesale department makes sure our chocolates are also readily available in Dayton-Cincinnati area grocery stores.
Whatever your delight or reason to buy, you can be certain that the Esther Price gold box tied with red ribbon is your assurance that this is the candy by which all others are measured.
